A Terrible Beauty features selected works from Hannah Altman, Eduardo L. Rivera and Rana Young. In the work of Young, we see images of vacant looming, Rivera’s a familial comfort, while Altman’s a constructed tableau steeped in symbolism. Each artist represents their individual connections to family and tradition through their work, and in the process of this reflection are changed. It is in the illumination of these textured and layered experiences that we are revealed their terrible beauty.
The exhibition was curated by students enrolled in PHT 0191: A Peoples’ History of Photography, a special topics course that uses the broader concepts of history, community, and process as critical frameworks to consider photography’s artistic, cultural, political, and social functions.
Co-Curators: Andrew J. Bailey, Yuxuan Cai, William C. Casey, Niko Krivanek, Amy Ma, Nicol Mai, Barkat Mehra, Justin Musyimi, Matilda Peng, Karen M. Salam and Zora J Murff (Endowed Professor of the Practice in Photography).
